When to use WAV

FLAC is ideal when you want perfect quality without WAV-sized files:

Not every app or phone plays FLAC as easily as MP3. For audience-facing files, MP3 is still more convenient. For your archive, FLAC is excellent.

Generate or record in the highest quality your tool allows → edit in WAV or high-bitrate MP3 → export the final video with normal YouTube settings. The platform will compress audio; starting from a clean source still helps.

Podcast
Edit in WAV (or high-quality MP3) → deliver MP3 to your host at the bitrate they recommend (often 128–192 kbps mono or stereo for speech).

Client voiceover delivery
Ask the client. Many still expect WAV. If they only need a web file, a 256–320 kbps MP3 is usually fine.

Music beds under narration
Keep music in high quality while mixing so you are not stacking multiple generations of lossy compression. Export the final mix as MP3 or let the video export handle it.

Does converting between formats hurt quality?

  • WAV → MP3: yes, lossy compression is applied. Use a high bitrate.
  • MP3 → WAV: the file gets bigger but quality does not improve. You cannot “restore” what was already discarded.
  • WAV ↔ FLAC: lossless either way; quality stays the same.
